Amazon, Apple, Google and Facebook in an unprecedented hearing in the US Congress

Egyptian News Vision: - The chief executives of Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook were in an unprecedented hearing within the US Congress, and faced criticism based on the increase in their profits and influence, especially during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The session was attended by the chairman of the anti-monopoly committee in the US Congress, and David Cicilline, chairman of the House Monopoly Subcommittee at the opening of the session, said, "Simply put, they have a lot of influence."

"Whether through self-preference, competitive pricing, or requiring users to purchase additional products, the dominant platforms have used their power in destructive and harmful ways for expansion,"

Cecilin added. Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner made a milder tone in the opening remarks, noting that tech giants were pivotal to the new lifestyles imposed on people during the epidemic, but he added that with increased influence comes increased scrutiny.

"Being a giant is not a bad thing by nature, quite the opposite, in the United States you have to be rewarded for success," Sensenbrenner said.

US antitrust laws must adapt to the innovations that have made technology companies successful and influential, according to him.

"I want to leave here today with a more complete picture of how companies use your size and influence," Sensenbrenner said.

In this unprecedented scene before the House Judicial Committee, Tim Cook from Apple, Jeff Bezos from Amazon, Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook, Sundar Pichai from Google, and parent company Alphabet.

Chief executives of four of the world's most powerful companies will testify remotely, less than 100 days before the US elections.

This will be the first time that Bezos has participated in a congressional hearing.
