US authorities found Sunday eight dead in a truck at a large shop in San Antonio, Texas, in what appeared to be an attempt to smuggle humans.

Twenty-eight wounded were found, 20 of them seriously injured, distributed to seven hospitals for treatment.

The police chief said the group included children and adults, adding that the truck driver had been arrested.

Store security records revealed the arrival of cars to pick up some of the passengers of the trailer who were okay. "We are investigating the crime of human trafficking this evening," he said.

It was not immediately clear how many people were able to leave the truck alive.
