Despite the large number of 186 candidates, current President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who suffers from the disease, ran for a fifth term.
A total of 186 people have requested documents to announce their candidature since the start of the electoral process last January.
The number of candidates for the 2019 elections is double the number of candidates who submitted at this stage during the last Algerian elections held in 2014.
Most of them may not have the necessary signatures to appear on the ballot on April 18, the Associated Press reported. Bouteflika, 82, has been leading Algeria for 20 years.
Bouteflika was hit in 2013 with a stroke that made him speak and move with difficulty, rarely appearing publicly.
