America called on the Russians to "return to the negotiating table" because of the threat that Russia poses to international peace and security.
"If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another Nord Stream 2 will not move forward," said US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland. "I think the statements coming out of Berlin so far are very strong."
Asked why the United States had such confidence, Nuland said the pipeline had not yet been tested and had not received the necessary approvals from German regulators, adding, "We will work with Germany to ensure that the pipeline does not move forward."
He will attend the pipeline file during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's talks at the White House on February 7, 2022.
And German Foreign Minister Annalina Birbock told parliament earlier Thursday that her government was "working on a strong sanctions package" with Western allies, "including Nord Stream 2 in case Russia attacks Ukraine."
