Twenty-nine children were killed in Kano state - northeastern Nigeria, after an overcrowded boat carrying 42 passengers aged between 8 and 15 sank.
A police spokesman in Kano state said that a search and rescue operation is underway, and those who have been rescued so far have been taken to hospital for medical attention, and it is not yet clear why the boat capsized.
Recently, at least seven girls drowned when a boat capsized in neighboring Jigawa prefecture.
And in May 2021, more than 100 people died in Kebbi State in a similar accident.
