Egypt: Saint Catherine's Great Transfiguration Project

International vision: Egypt has started implementing the first phase of the project to develop the city of Saint Catherine, known as “The Greatest Transfiguration.” It will be in the Zaytuna area, and will include 580 residential and tourist units, a mosque, a church, a school, a commercial market, administrative offices, a restaurant, a cafeteria, and a planetarium.

The "Greatest Transfiguration" project will also include a mountain hotel, modeled on the city's architectural heritage as a nature reserve.

A higher committee was formed that includes the ministries of environment, tourism and antiquities, and all relevant authorities in the country to follow up on the implementation of development projects.

The project aims to develop the city of Saint Catherine, to obtain its proper position, and to maximize the use of the tourism potentials of this city, which are of an archaeological, religious and environmental nature, in line with sustainable development trends.

The cost of the first phase of the project amounts to 4 billion pounds, and it is scheduled to open in April 2022.

The project is consistent and consistent with the surrounding environment, through the use of the surrounding environment materials and the involvement of the local community in the development work, in order to achieve sustainable development.

The Greatest Transfiguration project includes the establishment of a spiritual shrine on the mountains surrounding the Holy Valley, to be a destination for spiritual, mountain, healing and ecological tourism worldwide, in addition to providing all tourism and recreational services for visitors, and developing the city and its surroundings, while preserving the ecological and visual character of pristine nature.

The projects being implemented for the development of St. Catherine city also include the construction of a new eco-lodge, which is an extension of the Wadi Al Raha area and includes 216 rooms, in addition to the establishment of the desert garden along the foot of the mountain, linking the new eco-lodge to the mountain hotel, and the Musa Path Walk simulating the historical path of Moses through Wadi Al Raha. To reach Mount Transfiguration.

This is in addition to the development of the existing eco-lodge, the development of Sadat’s resting area, and the construction of the Peace Square, which includes an arena for outdoor celebrations, a diversified museum building, a theater, a conference hall, a cafeteria, and meeting rooms.

An integrated mountain hotel with 150 hotel units will also be established, the new visitor center at the entrance to the city, the site of the Holy Valley Square, the construction of the new administrative complex, the development of the tourist area through the establishment of the mountain tourism investment resort, and a commercial area (bazaars).

In addition to the establishment of the social building for the youth center, and the development of the heritage town center, which includes the development of the existing mosque, the development of existing shops, the addition of new shops, and the transformation of the area into a heritage tourist area for pedestrians only, commensurate with the character of the city.

Projects include:

  • Comprehensive development of the Bedouin homes area.
  • Coordination of the site and the establishment of two service centers.
  • Development of the Valley of the Deir area.
  • Establishment of the new residential area.
  • Adding housing units and services to accommodate the expected housing density for the city after development.
  • Implementation of site coordination works in the main pedestrian path in Wadi Al-Arbaeen from the visitor center to the city center.
  • Road network works for automatic movement.
  • Developing and raising the efficiency of infrastructure and facilities.
  • Flood prevention work.
  • Addressing the flood drains whose paths have been taken into account in the design of the general plan of the city so that it becomes a positive element within the network of paths and site coordination in the city.
